Released On: 3/9/2020

The Lorain Public Library System has something cookin’ with AmeriCorps, a federal program aimed at improving communities across the country, by bringing a VISTA member to our branches.

The VISTA, or Volunteer in Service to America, member will be responsible for increasing the library’s capacity to provide food education programs by recruiting volunteers, creating efficient workflows around programming, strengthening community partnerships and assessing community needs.

The member will work at three of our six branches to participate in the Summer Food Service Program for children in addition to system-wide year-round educational programs for families and adults wanting to incorporate healthy eating habits into their daily lives.

Responsibilities will include:

  • Increasing the library’s capacity to provide food education programs by recruiting volunteers
  • Creating efficient workflows around programming
  • Strengthening community partnerships and assessing community needs
  • Coordinating the Summer Food Service Program, the Food and Fun programs and adult culinary programs at Main, Domonkas and South Lorain
  • Recruiting volunteers and creating partnerships with other organizations
  • Conducting a community assessment in Sheffield Lake and South Lorain to improve participation in all culinary programs

The Main Library is also creating a demonstration kitchen to expand programming, while branches are getting mobile kitchens called Charlie Carts to expand offerings. The system also partners with the City Fresh farm share program and Second Harvest Food Bank to provide fresh food options for families in our service area.

The position requires a high school diploma or GED, is full time for one year and comes with a living allowance paid for by AmeriCorps.

We are accepting applications until May 4. For more information and to apply visit
