ASSISTANT MANAGER- MAIN LIBRARY

Grade E

Position Summary:

As part of the management team, assists the Building Manager with all aspects of library operations, and in the absence of the manager is responsible for the patron’s library experience, including the physical site management, staffing, customer service, and other library issues. Under the direction of the Librarian Manager, coordinates and/or assists with special projects. Works with minimal level of supervision, generally for problem resolution.

 

Characteristic Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Manages and leads in the daily operation of a library department or branch.

  • Oversees physical plant (cleanliness, safety, security use) and reports problems.

  • Reviews and submits staff time sheets and prepares schedules.

  • Assists the manager with implementing programs and services.

  • Monitors operations and makes recommendations for adjustments and/or improvements.

  • Assists with and/or coordinates special projects.

  • Resolves complaints.

  • Reviews and responds to patron web requests.

  • Monitors reports and enters system-wide IT tickets with CLEVNET.

  • Trains current and new staff.

  • Works at various public service desks as needed.

  • Assists the manager with employee evaluations and development.

  • Provides input into hire, fire, and disciplinary actions.

  • May participate on special committees inside the library and/or within the community.

  • Assists with Library’s outcome measures initiative.

  • Represents the Library in public and attends meetings.

  • Maintains good public relations with the community.

  • Serves as a member of the Management Team.

  • Serves as manager of any branch as needed.

 

Education/Experience Requirements:


  • Requires a bachelor’s degree and three years of professional library experience reflecting increasing levels of responsibility.

  • Or any equivalent combination of experience and training which provides the required knowledge, skills, and abilities.

  • ALA-accredited MLIS preferred.

  • Excellent customer service skills.

  • Ability to independently solve complex library and operational problems.

  • Ability to lead, plan, and supervise the work of others.

  • Knowledge of principles of library science, methods, and resources.

  • Excellent interpersonal skills, including the ability to communicate and work cooperatively with all staff and the public.

  • High level of comfort taking initiative and completing tasks and projects independently at high standards.

  • Outstanding written and oral communication skills, including the ability speak effectively in public as a Library representative.

  • Exceptional prioritization skills.

  • Must be able to juggle multiple priorities simultaneously.

  • Ability to use office productivity and communications software applications.

  • Ability to work cooperatively and collaboratively with managers and executives.

  • Tact and courtesy.

  • Team focused.

  • Sound professional judgment and the ability to remain calm in difficult situations.

  • Experience with budget development and administration.

Other: Applicants are expected to work evenings and weekends. Regular travel throughout the System and communities expected. The Lorain Public Library System has six locations and an Outreach Department, which serve a diverse population of over 135,000. Salary dependent on experience and qualifications.
