Come To Our How-To Programs In September!

September is How-To Month and we’re hosting over two dozen entertaining workshops. 

 

Check out exciting programs throughout the Lorain Public Library System! 

 

From hands-on activities to demonstrational programs, there’s something for everyone.

 

Learn how to arrange flowers, decorate cupcakes or repair earrings.

 

Practice relaxing massage techniques to try at home and learn about natural healing for a satisfying, healthy life.

 

Discover how to trace the history of your house, or run a successful genealogy search on the Internet. 

 

Even learn how to publish and market your own eBook

 

Parents, hear from a pro on how to quickly potty train your children.

 

You know us as a place you can turn to for books about these topics, but in September, the words come to life.  It’ll be visual, it’ll be informative, and it’ll be fun!

 

 

“We always offer programs that teach new skills, whether that is in computer instruction, a knitting class or other simple crafts.  This how-to series includes programs that the library does not usually offer like couples massage and nail art,” said Frances Johnson, LPLS circulation supervisor.

 

 

All ages can join the fun during How-To Month in September.

 

Kids can learn how to be a pirate for a day!  Or have your children make their own drag cup race car while learning the science of potential and kinetic energy.

 

How about making a Guatemalan worry doll or Mexican sugar skull?

 

Otaku.  Cooking.  Arts and crafts.  The list goes on!

Potty Training Boot Camp

Wednesday, Sept. 3 from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m.

Parents are invited to attend a program with local Avon Lake Author Teri Crane of the award-winning book, Potty Train Your Child in Just One Day: Proven Secrets of the Potty Pro. Potty training tips and suggestions will be provided to help you beat the clock in time for preschool.

Wood Carving 101

Tuesday, Sept. 9 at 6 p.m.

South Lorain Branch Library, 2121 Homewood Drive, Lorain

Bob Phelan of the Lorain County Woodcarvers' Club will demonstrate the basic wood carving cuts and present examples of chip carving, relief carving, whittling and carving in the round.

Kindergarteners through fifth-graders, have you ever seen a race car built out of disposable coffee cups? Get ready to have some fun as we explore the differences between potential and kinetic energy. Preregistration will begin one month before the program.

Natural Healing and Wellness

Mondays, Sept. 15 and Sept. 29 at 6 p.m.

Adults are invited to learn about common health issues and techniques to help manage them. Program presenter Michael Stadul is a retired Cuyahoga Community College faculty member and certified Medical Chi Kung instructor. This program is divided into 2 parts: Part 1 Sept. 15, Part 2 Sept. 29.

Members of the Garden Club of North Ridgeville will present three fun activities: making a quilt square, flower arranging, and feng shui in the garden.  They will demonstrate their skills and will teach those in attendance how to apply these techniques at home.  The program is free and open to the public.

Tracing the History of your House

Saturday, Sept. 27 at 11 a.m.

Your house has a past! You probably have heard the expression, “If these walls could talk.” Becky Hill, head librarian of the Rutherford B. Hayes Presidential Center, is the instructor for this program that will show you how to find what your walls could say. Hill will explain how to use printed and online sources to get to the root of your home’s past. She will guide attendees in identifying prior owners of structures, as well as the history of the properties. Among the available reference materials Hill will discuss are deeds, Sanborn maps, city directories and tax records.

Learn How To Create Your Own Book

Saturday, Sept. 27 at 3 p.m.

Main Library, 351 W. Sixth Street, Lorain

Digital cameras have helped us all to be better photographers, but don’t just leave all those great photos on the hard drive of your computer. Becky Hill, head librarian of the Rutherford B. Hayes Presidential Center, is the instructor for this program that shows you how to easily and economically create a personalized book with your images. The class will teach you how to use online resources to self-publish a professional quality book in any quantity. Hill will explain the process of making a personalized book using Blurb.com. She emphasizes that through this website, you can create a published book, as well as a book that is stored online. Blurb.com permits its free software to be downloaded to a personal computer. When complete, the book then can be uploaded back to Blurb.com for printing of hard copies. The look of the finished product is as limitless as the creator’s imagination. Hill was inspired to create her first book after her first grandchild was born. She now creates a personalized storybook for her grandchildren every Christmas. She also helped her 90-year-old mother produce an autobiography.
